How to Read Your House’s Hydro Meter in Ontario

Before you can start reading your hydro meter, you need to know where it’s located. In most Ontario homes, the hydro meter is typically found outside, mounted on an exterior wall, in a meter pit, or within a weatherproof enclosure. It may also be inside your home, in a basement or utility room.

Once you’ve located your hydro meter, you’ll notice that it has several dials or numbers. In Ontario, the most common type of hydro meter is the electromechanical meter with a series of dials.

Each dial represents a digit in the meter’s reading. The dials rotate clockwise, and each dial is labeled with numbers 0 to 9. Here’s how to read the dials:

• Start with the first dial on the left: Read the number that the pointer is closest to. If the pointer is between two numbers, record the lower number.
• Move to the next dial to the right: Repeat the process for each dial, moving from left to right.
• Special Note: If the pointer is directly on a number, such as 5, record it and underline it as it is a “5.” However, if the pointer is between 9 and 0, record it as 9.

To calculate your electricity consumption, you’ll need to take two readings at different times and subtract the earlier reading from the later one. The result will give you the number of kilowatt-hours (kWh) used during that period. This is the same process if you have a smart meter without dials.
